The Idea

'A compilation of cartoons that are causally connected to one another. Of different characters who look and behave very differently because they are drawn by different artists, but that live in a shared world, loosely connected by an overarching plot/story drift.'

The idea for this publication stems from a love of drawing and the desire for a collaborative project using this medium. It might also serve as the continuation of the occasional publication, 'ChopChop', which ran for several editions in Sheffield, UK, circa 2003-2008, and was edited by Elodie Plouf and Oliver Alchin. ChopChop was much loved.

In it's new incarnation, in the supposed 'non-place' of the supermarket, the format is altered from  drawing free-for-all to a shared setting. It is hoped this common ground will provide space for characters and events from different artists to be re-used, or seen from a different angle, within these curious 'supermodern' places.

An overall aim of the work would be to provide a balanced picture of the supermarket as a place to be human. To find different spins on this strange, modern phenomenon which we all share.

For further reference, the idea of the 'supermodern' is presented by Marc Auge in his book, 'Non-Places: An Introduction to Supermodernity' (click here for the amazon link). Though the idea of the book is not of central importance to this project, it is hoped that the ideas presented therein might serve as an interesting underpinning. At the very least, reading the description via the link gives a good impression of Auge's gist.
